
A shopping bag or produce roll bag looks simple when it reaches the customer, but its performance depends on several controlled manufacturing stages. Material selection, film thickness, extrusion stability, printing, sealing, cutting, and packing all affect whether the finished bag can carry its intended load.
Understanding the process helps buyers write better specifications and investigate quality differences between suppliers.
Material preparation
Production begins with the selected polymer and any approved additives or color masterbatch. The formulation depends on the bag type, required strength, clarity, flexibility, sealing, and intended application.
Materials must be identified, stored, and mixed consistently. A change in formulation can alter how the film stretches, seals, prints, or performs under load.
Film extrusion
Plastic material is melted and formed into a continuous film. In blown-film production, the melt is extruded through a circular die and expanded into a bubble. Airflow, temperature, output, and cooling must remain stable.
The bubble is collapsed into flat film and wound into rolls. Operators monitor width, thickness, appearance, and winding quality. Uneven film can create weak areas or problems later during printing and bag making.
Printing when required
Printed bags move through a printing process using approved artwork and colors. Setup includes plates, inks, registration, and drying conditions. The film surface must be suitable for ink adhesion.
Buyers should approve artwork, dimensions, color references, and print position before production. Small artwork changes after plates are prepared can affect both cost and lead time.
Cutting, sealing, and bag formation
Film rolls are converted into individual bags or perforated rolls. The machine cuts the material, creates seals, forms handles or gussets, and adds perforations according to the design.
Temperature, pressure, speed, and alignment influence seal strength. A seal can appear complete while still failing under load, so functional testing is essential.
Inspection during production
Typical checks include bag width and length, thickness, weight, seal position, perforation, printing, handle shape, appearance, and load performance. Roll bags also require consistent count, winding, and tear-off behavior.
Defects should be detected before large quantities are packed. Recorded in-process checks make it easier to identify when a problem began.
Counting and packing
Finished bags may be bundled, placed on rolls, or packed directly into cartons. The packing quantity and carton protection must prevent crushing, contamination, and deformation during shipment.
Carton labels should identify the product and production information needed for traceability and warehouse handling.
What buyers should specify
Provide bag type, open size, thickness, material, color, printing, handle, gusset, seal, perforation, roll count, load requirement, carton quantity, and destination market. A physical reference sample is useful but should be supported by written measurements.

How to compare bag samples
Use the same test conditions for every supplier. Measure dimensions and weight, inspect seals and perforations, and load each bag with representative products. Test bags immediately and after the expected storage period because film and seals may behave differently over time. For printed products, rub and flex the printed area and check alignment across several bags. Keep approved samples and record test results rather than relying on hand feel. A bag that feels thicker is not automatically stronger, and a lighter film may perform well when its formulation and seal design are properly controlled.
Why machine compatibility matters
If bags will be dispensed, opened, or packed automatically, send the supplier equipment details and trial the production roll. Roll tension, core size, static, and winding can be as important as the individual bag dimensions.
